Mallory, Ray In Memory Of Ray Mallory Kern County Sheriff’s Department, CA End of watch: 1983-08-16 Aircraft: unknown airplane Reserve Deputy Ray Mallory and Pilot Lansing Lloyd Warren were helping search for a lost pilot when their single-engine plane crashed in hilly terrain north of Kernville in Tulare County. Long-time sheriff’s reservist Ray Mallory was buried at Hillcrest Cemetery as pilots from the sheriff’s aerosquadron flew overhead in tribute. Mallory had been a member of the Kern County Search and Rescue Team since 1955. He was born in Long Beach in 1938 and was a longtime Kern County resident. Mallory was a legend in the field of Search and Rescue within Kern County. He has not only been captain of the unit for over 20 years, but he has been responsible for training most of the Search and Rescue members and units involved in rescues on the river. Ray was also a reserve deputy for over 20-years and has been a part-time deputy with Kernville substation for the last several years. He was survived by his wife, Gloria, of Bakersfield; daughter Frances of Onyx; his mother, Frances Mallory of Kernville; and a brother, Bud Mallory of Onyx. Thoughts and Memories of Joseph Mariconda Wayne Nutsch Joe was my roommate in Army flight school in 1965/66. He was in the 11th Armored Cav in South Viet Nam. In the summer of ’67 he visited me in Ft. Worth, TX on his way home to NYC, as he was ending his active duty Army career as a Captain Aviator. He was a friend who is remembered. Mattaliano, James In Memory Of James Mattaliano Massachusetts State Police, MA End of watch: 1995-02-22 Aircraft: AS350 Troopers James Mattaliano and Paul A. Perry were en-route with two passengers from a heliport bound for the Massachusetts State Police station at Norwood. Some six minutes after receiving clearance from Boston ATC, at 0933 hours, the helicopter crashed into the Harvard Sailing Pavilion on the Cambridge side of the Charles River next to the MIT Sloan School. The two civilian passengers from AT&T, Arthur T. Howell and Michael McCarthy, were also killed. Trooper Mattaliano was a member of the 65th Recruit Training Troop and a member of the State Police since 1983. He joined the Air Wing in 1989. Both his wife and brother are troopers and his father was Chief of Police in Milton. This incident marks the first time two members of the State Police were killed in the same incident. May, David In Memory Of David May Missouri State Highway Patrol, MO End of watch: 1999-05-17 Aircraft: unknown helicopter Sergeant David Cargene May was killed in a police helicopter crash while following the Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics. Witnesses stated that the tail rotor on the chopper stopped turning, causing him to lose control of the helicopter, which went into a spin and crashed. The passenger in the helicopter, a Special Olympics photographer, was also killed. Sergeant May had been with the agency for 18 years and is survived by his wife and two daughters. McCabe, James In Memory Of James McCabe California Highway Patrol, CA End of watch: 1978-09-01 Aircraft: unknown helicopter Officers James E. McCabe and Gayle W. Wood were on air-traffic patrol, making their last run before quitting at dusk when their CHP helicopter crashed and burned near Castaic Lake on Interstate 5. The helicopter struck a power line support that apparently was not visible in the approaching darkness. Officer McCabe, the 34-year-old observer, had been a member of the Patrol for seven years and a helicopter observer for six months. While circumnavigating Ugak Island, a small island with high terrain just off the main island of Kodiak, it is believed that they encountered unexpected weather in the form of heavy winds and rain. The aircraft impacted a high cliff and fell to the beach below to be consumed by a post-crash fire. The aircraft was crewed by ASM2 Kevin M. McLain, Kristin E. In Memory Of Kristin E. McLain Travis County STAR Flight, TX End of watch: 2015-04-27 Aircraft: EC145 Kristin fell to her death while performing a night hoist rescue in the Barton Creek Greenbelt in Austin, Texas. Kristin was an experienced Crew Chief (CC), Hoist Operator (HO), and Helicopter Rescue Specialist (HRS). On this night Kristin was performing duty as the HRS. The victim had fallen some forty feet in steep and very rugged terrain and sustained serious injury. A joint decision was made to perform a hoist rescue of the victim by the Austin Fire Department Special Operations Incident Command and the STAR Flight crew. At some point after being hoisted out of the scene but prior to arrival up to the 7 meter position Kristin became detached from the hoist and fell. McSwenney, James In Memory Of James McSwenney Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, CA End of watch: 1988-10-24 Aircraft: Bell UH1 Five sheriff’s deputies from Southern California and three National Guardsmen were killed when the helicopter they were flying in a joint drug interdiction mission snagged on a power line and exploded into a hillside in western Imperial County. The accident occurred Monday, Oct. 24, about 9:30 p.m., approximately 63 miles east of San Diego on what was described as a training flight on the first night of an unpublicized anti-drug surveillance program called Operation Border Ranger. The National Guard UH-1H Huey helicopter crashed when it tried to make a pass through an isolated canyon to close in on a parked car thought to belong to drug smugglers, a National Guard spokesman stated. Killed in the crash were five deputies from a consortium of six Southern California sheriff’s departments that sponsored Operation Border Ranger, an anti-drug smuggling program that was quietly organized earlier this year. The three dead guardsmen were stationed with the 140th Aviation Unit at the Los Alamitos Armed Forces Reserve Center in Orange County. The dead deputies were identified as James D. McSweeney, 43, of Huntington Beach, and Roy A. Chester, 41, of La Verne, both 12-year Los Angeles County Sheriff’s veterans; Sgt. Richard G. Romero, 39, El Centro, a 14-year veteran in Imperial County; Mark Steven Tonkin, 31, Chino, a seven-year member of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department; and Investigator Michael David Davis, 34, Indio, a nine-year veteran Riverside County deputy. San Diego and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Departments, the other participants in the program, had no one on board. The deputies who died were all experienced narcotics officers. McSweeney, divorced and with no children, was once shot in the arm and chest while apprehending an armed narcotics suspect. The helicopter was piloted over the rough terrain, searching for the young man when a probable down draft caused the helicopter to crash into the trees. Mobley, Ed In Memory Of Ed Mobley Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada End of watch: 2000-08-15 Aircraft: Cessna Ce208 Caravan Pilot Sergeant Ed Mobley, 49, was from the Prince Rupert RCMP detachment died shortly after dropping off members of the Terrace RCMP Emergency Response Team near Teslin Lake. The aircraft took off and climbed to around 1,500 feet before plunging nose first into the lake on the British Columbia -Yukon boundary. Special Constable Tim Nicholson, 48, a flight engineer from Ottawa, was also killed. Members of the ERT immediately went into the water, but were unable to locate the two victims. Moen, James In Memory Of James Moen Alaska State Troopers, AK End of watch: 2001-06-25 Aircraft: PA-18 Piper Cub On Monday, June 25, 2001, at some time after 9:00 PM, Alaska State Trooper James A. Moen, age 49 of McGrath, was killed in an airplane crash in a remote area approximately 65 miles southwest of Lake Illiamna. Trooper Moen, a 17 year veteran of the Division of Fish and Wildlife Protection, had been conducting aroutine sport fishing patrol in a state PA-18 Piper Cub on floats. Trooper Moen was the sole occupant of the plane. Trooper James A. Moen – Alaska State Trooper – Fish & Wildlife Protection. Another trooper pilot reported spotting the crash site from the air that evening, landed about one-half mile away, and hiked to the site. Trooper Moen was an experienced state and military pilot; he was commercial and instrument rated and had accumulated over 4000 hours of flight time. During his 17 years with the Troopers, Trooper Moen served in Petersburg, Soldotna, and most recently in McGrath. Trooper Moen is survived by his wife, Anne and four children, James, Anneliese, Megan and Ryan. Funeral services were held at Bryant Field Hanger Number One at Fort Richardson with Burial at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. He was a great student in school. He loved to run track and has many medals of excellence. When he went into the US Marines, my family was so proud of him. He flew helicopters for Air America during the Vietnam War and then flew for the Police Department. He will be missed and loved forever. Robert M. Brodkey Tom flew helicopter missions for Air America supporting a field unit of the Advanced Research Projects Agency, DOD, in Thailand in the late 1960s. I was one of his passengers. Moonen, Doug In Memory Of Doug Moonen Kern County Sheriff’s Department, CA End of watch: 1986-08-16 Aircraft: unknown airplane August 16, 1986 was scheduled as a training session for the Sheriff’s Department Aerosquadron and Search and Rescue units. The mission objectives were to see how a fixed-wing aircraft could be used to search for drowning victims in the Kern River, state certify Ray Bockman’s search dog in a fixed-wing aircraft, and acclimate Sergeant Marvin Kline in a small fixed-wing aircraft since he was second-in-command for the Search and Rescue unit and had never flown in a small aircraft. Doug Moonen, the volunteer Aerosquadron pilot with 12,000 hours of flight time, was piloting his Cessna 182 along the Kern River at a low altitude. Sergeant Marvin Kline was on the passenger side and Roy Bockman and his dog Kelly were in the back of the plane. The team was searching for drowning victims in the Kern River from the mouth of the canyon to Hart Park. Apparently, Doug Moonen forgot about the low electrical wires across the Kern River on the west end of Hart Park and piloted the plane into the wires. The investigation revealed Doug Moonen’s airplane clipped the electrical wires forcing the aircraft to the ground in a violent motion striking trees and killing all three men and the dog on impact. Doug Moonen’s aircraft came to rest on the north side of Mirror Lake approximately 200 yards from the west entrance of Hart Park. Moore was killed in an airplane crash while flying an air patrol in northeast Ohio. His plane went down north of Mt. Vernon and east of State Route 13 due to heavy rain, poor visibility, and strong, gusty winds. Morgan, Billy In Memory Of Billy Morgan Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs C, OK End of watch: 1981-06-30 Aircraft: unknown airplane On Thursday morning, July 30, 1981, Agent Billy Fairl Morgan, 29, was piloting a leased single-engine airplane looking for marijuana patches in Pittsburg County along with McAlester Police Department Corporal Ronnie Fox, 38, and Detective David Sheehan, 28. About 8:20 A.M. the plane came out of a cloud bank and Morgan had to put the plane in a steep climb to avoid a mountain. During the climb both wings cracked and the left wing fell off. The plane crashed in the foothills of the Jack Fork Mountains, six miles northeast of Daisy, just inside Pittsburg County killing all three officers. Morton, Rolland In Memory Of Rolland Morton Santa Monica Police Department, CA End of watch: 1933-03-10 Aircraft: unknown airplane On March 10, 1933, Sergeant Rolland Morton and Special Officer Federick Porter were called upon by Police Chief Webb to fly to Long Beach to provide assistance to those recovering from a major and devastating earthquake. They were to also check the well-being of Santa Monica residents who were working at the Puget Sound Bridge & Dredging Co., which was supplying rock for the breakwater in Santa Monica. They took off in foggy conditions. Witnesses saw their plane close to the ground; it rose and upon coming down knocked its landing gear off. The plane cart-wheeled and burst into flames.
