Allison, Wayne In Memory Of Wayne Allison New Mexico State Police, NM End of watch: 1988-02-13 Aircraft: Cessna 337 Skymaster Wayne Allison was born in 1956 in Illinois, and joined the New Mexico State Police in November 1985. He was stationed in Gallup and after two years there he was transferred to the Aircraft Division in Santa Fe as a pilot. On the morning of February 13, 1988, at 3:34 a.m., Wayne departed from Santa Fe, flying a state police Cessna 337 Skymaster, bound for Carlsbad, New Mexico. Communication was established with air traffic controllers shortly after departure and there were no apparent problems. Approximately eight miles southeast of Galisteo, at about 4:00 a.m., for reasons unknown, the aircraft plummeted straight into the ground killing Wayne instantly. The National Transportation Safety Board conducted the investigation into the cause of the crash and ruled it to be indeterminable. Wayne was survived by his wife. Almer, Paul In Memory Of Paul Almer Pennsylvania State Police, PA End of watch: 1989-04-12 Aircraft: Bell 206 At 7:30 a.m. on April 12, 1989, Corporal Almer was piloting H-1 with Trooper Wayne D. Bilheimer, a criminal investigator from Troop J, Lancaster, as his observation passenger. The helicopter took off from Aviation Patrol Unit No. 1 based at Reading Municipal Airport to search the Susquehanna River for the body of James C. Groff, a 50-year-old farmer from Holtwood, who reportedly jumped into the river. At 9:44 a.m., while flying at an altitude of 90 feet, the helicopter struck a 34,000-volt power line. The craft crashed into 10 feet of water in a channel between Lower Bear Island and Boeckel’s Landing on the west bank of the river in southern York County, just north of the Maryland border. Scuba divers from several agencies found the wreckage with Corporal Almer and Trooper Bilheimer still strapped in their seats. The wreckage was lifted by a Pennsylvania National Guard Skycrane helicopter at 4 p.m. The bodies of Corporal Almer and Trooper Bilheimer had been previously brought to the surface by Sergeant Wilson Knight, a diver from the Harford County, Maryland, Sheriff’s Department. According to the Lancaster County Coroner, Corporal Almer died of drowning, while Trooper Bilheimer died from multiple trauma. Paul Almer was born June 19, 1949, at Fountain Hill, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Prior to enlisting in the Pennsylvania State Police, he served four years with the US Army including 18 months as a combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam. He was promoted to First Lieutenant prior to discharge from active duty and reached the rank of Major in the Pennsylvania National Guard as the commander of an aviation squadron at Fort Indiantown Gap. He entered the State Police Academy on March 6, 1975, and was assigned to Troop J, Lancaster, upon graduation. Corporal Almer was buried with full military honors at Fort Indiantown Gap Cemetery in Lebanon County . He was survived by his mother, Mrs. Anita Almer, of Bethlehem. She was presented with the State Police Cross. Corporal Almer was engaged to be married. At 39, he had served 14 years and one month with the Pennsylvania State Police. Arvanitis, Plato In Memory Of Plato Arvanitis New York City Police Department, NY End of watch: 1967-12-21 Aircraft: Bell 47J-2 Officer Arvanitis and Officer George Bishop were killed in when the helicopter he and Ptl. Plato B. Arvanitis were manning plunged into the icy waters of the East River near the Manhattan Bridge approximately 2 hours into the flight. Officer Arvanitis and Officer George Bishop were on a traffic surveillance flight. Ptl. Arvanitis; body was recovered shortly after the accident. Ptl. Bishop’s body was not found until May 17, 1968. Part of the plane’s wreckage was salvaged just after the crash. The main part, engine, rotor, and cockpit was recovered by the Police Department on March 20, three days before a memorial mass for Ptl. Bishop. Officer Arvanitis had been with the NYPD for 12 years. Ashley, Richard In Memory Of Richard Ashley Chowan County Sheriff's Office, NC End of watch: 2002-07-17 Aircraft: Cessna 172 Deputy Richard Edward Ashley Jr., of the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office, was killed when the Civil Air Patrol plane he was flying in crashed at Edenton, North Carolina while searching for marijuana plants. Also killed were Pilot Sergeant Anthony Scott Futrell or the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and TFO Major Robert C. Kennedy of the Boone Police Department. Deputy Ashley was a 1984 graduate of John A. Holmes High School. After graduation he co-owned a garage and towing service with is father. He attended Faith Fellowship Baptist Church. Deputy Ashely completed BLET, first in his class on March 14, 2001, and joined the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office. He volunteered for the drug eradication program where his job was to communicate with law enforcement officials on the ground the location of marijuana found. The airplane he was on crashed approximately a mile from his home. Deputy Sheriff Richard Edward Ashley Sr. is survived by his wife, May; two sons, Richard Jr. and Steven; his father, Raleigh Ashely Jr.; his mother Mary Virginia Lewis; his brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Micky Ashley; and a niece and nephew, Megan and Jake. Avant, James In Memory Of James Avant Pulaski County Sheriff's Office, AR End of watch: 1986-07-24 Aircraft: unknown helicopter Deputy Sheriff James A. Avant, Pulaski County, Arkansas, Sheriff’s Office, was killed on July 24, 1986, in a helicopter crash in Mount Ida, Arkansas. Deputy Sheriff Avant was assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Task Force in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was 37 years of age at the time of his death. Deputy Avant was participating in a DEA Marijuana Eradication Spotter School, when the helicopter in which he was riding crashed shortly after taking off on a marijuana eradication mission. Officers Charles M. Bassing and Kevin L. Brosch also died as a result of the crash. The pilot and a DEA Special Agent were critically injured in the crash. Deputy Avant, a narcotics detective, joined the Pulaski County Sheriffs Office in 1985. Prior to joining the Sheriffs Office, he served with the Camden, Arkansas, Police Department and the Arkansas State Police. He was survived by his wife and three children. Barnes, Gerald In Memory Of Gerald Barnes Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, AZ End of watch: 1957-10-05 Aircraft: Tri-Pacer Deputy Gerald Barnes drowned while pinned in the wreckage of the Sheriff’s four passenger Tri-Pacer after it crashed into the Arizona Canal seven miles northeast of Scottsdale. Barnes and Deputy Frank Grove were serving as observers while Sergeant Paul Mullenix piloted the plane in a search of a stolen truck and a car used in a holdup. When the low flying plane stalled, it’s landing gear hit a power line and toppled the plane into a four foot deep canal. Witnesses irrigating a nearby field helped rescue the pilot and the Deputy in the front seat, but Deputy Barnes was trapped in a rear seat, and they were unable to reach him in time. Basford, Trenwith In Memory Of Trenwith Basford U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, MN End of watch: 1977-08-25 Aircraft: unknown airplane On August 25, 1977, Special Agents Trenwith S. Basford and Mark A. Kirkland were killed in northern Minnesota as the result of an airplane crash into Dewey Lake. SA Basford was piloting his personally owned plane, which had been approved for official use. The Agents were assisting Agents of the Duluth Resident Agency in conducting an aerial surveillance when the crash occurred. At the time of his death, SA Basford was 60 years old and had served over 35 years in the FBI. SA Kirkland was 33 years of age. He recognized my enthusiasm and was able to channel that enthusiasm into our work. He had such patience with me. I will always remember Tren. Roger T. Fisher It was my great privilege to work with Tren while assigned to the Minneapolis Division of the FBI, and later as Resident Agent in Sioux Falls, SD during the years 1972-74. I remember him as a consummate professional who also possessed a kind and pleasant demeanor. He was always immaculately groomed and conducted himself with quiet efficiency. Tren never failed to speak, smile, or offer assistance to the newer agents. I was shocked and saddened when I learned of his death. But true to form, he died doing his duty while helping others. Bassing, Charles In Memory Of Charles Bassing Arkansas State Police, AR End of watch: 1986-07-24 Aircraft: unknown helicopter Criminal Investigator Bassing, Arkansas State Police, was killed on July 24, 1986, in a helicopter crash in Mt. Ida, Arkansas. He was 33 years of age at the time of his death. Baxter, John In Memory Of John Baxter Florida Highway Patrol, FL End of watch: 1985-10-02 Aircraft: Cessna 172-P Pilot Sergeant John C. “Jack” Baxter, Jr. died when his airplane crashed in Manatee County, while assisting in the search for a suspect in four armed robberies. He had served the citizens of Florida, with the Florida Highway Patrol, for 25 years. His career with FHP began August 1, 1960. He was in the 20th recruit class in Tallahassee, from January 19 to April 8, 1961. He was stationed in Brooksville, Fort Lauderdale, Sarasota and Bradenton. At the time of his death, he was 57. Beers, Fred In Memory Of Fred Beers Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department, NM End of watch: 2022-07-16 Aircraft: Bell UH-1H On July 16, 2022 at approximately 7:20 pm, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department helicopter known as Metro 2 crashed just outside of Las Vegas, NM. The helicopter and its crew were assisting with a wildfire in the area, providing bucket drops and other air logistics needs to fire crews on the ground. All four members of the crew, Undersheriff and Pilot Larry Koren, Tactical Flight Officer Lieutenant Fred Beers, Tactical Flight Officer Deputy Michael Levison and Rescue Specialist Lieutenant Matthew King, perished in the crash. He was flying a Cessna 206 on observation patrol for a speed detail near Highway 78 when it went down about 9:30 am. The crash occurred in the desert near Highway 78 and Split Mountain Road, in Imperial County. Trooper Bilheimer was 44 years old and had served 21 years and 3 months as a Pennsylvania State Trooper. Bloom, Delbert In Memory Of Delbert Bloom Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks, MT End of watch: 1979-06-02 Aircraft: Piper Subercub Game Warden Delbert Bloom and a department biologist were killed in an airplane crash in Chouteau County while conducting a goose survey. The Piper Subercub that Warden Bloom was piloting struck several trees and crashed approximately 500 yards from the Marias River. Their bodies were recovered from the wreckage the following day after an aerial search located the crash site. Thoughts and Memories of Delbert Bloom Ken Hall Del and I served together in the 8th Special Forces Group in Panama, 1965-67. Del always talked about his love for fishing and hunting. He couldn’t wait to get back. When we all got out of the Army we stayed in touch for a couple of years but then got too busy and lost contact, just doing the usual thing of Christmas cards in December. It was devastating to learn of his death in 1979. Del epitomized the saying, “A friend is one you can sit next to on the couch for two hours, never saying a word, and at the end of the time you feel it was one of the best conversations you ever had.” He was a believer in doing the right thing, stepping forward to fight for what he believed in, and in putting others ahead of himself. The world is a better place for Del having been here, and a lonelier place now that he is gone. May he rest in peace and know he is missed.
