Howard, Lowell In Memory Of Lowell Howard New Mexico State Police, NM End of watch: 1984-08-06 Aircraft: unknown airplane Patrolman Howard and Patrolman David Smith were killed in an airplane accident while performing an aerial speed enforcement operation. After the operation ended the officers radioed that they were going to fly over the enforcement zone one last time. As they did so one of the aircraft wheels struck a powerline, causing the aircraft to strike the ground. Both officers were killed instantly. Howe, Gary In Memory Of Gary Howe Los Angeles Police Department, CA End of watch: 1991-06-13 Aircraft: AS350B Officers Gary Howe and Randy Champe, operating “Air 12”, suffered a mechanical failure and crashed near Vernon Street and Raymond Avenue. Both crew members were killed, as well as a civilian on the ground. More than 2,000 law enforcement officers from throughout Southern California converged on the Hollywood Hills to honor them. More than 30 helicopters saluted the fallen officers with a 10-minute flyover as part of the smoggy morning ceremony at Forest Lawn Memorial Park cemetery. The memorial service opened with a bagpipe rendition of “Amazing Grace” and ended 90 minutes later with the somber blasts of “Taps” from a gleaming trumpet. Police and military honor guards paid tribute to the two officers with a 21-gun salute, followed by the ceremonial folding of the American flags that had been draped over the caskets. Gates and Capt. Robert Woods, commanding officer of the Air Support Division, presented the flags to Sue Champe, and Lynette Howe the widows. Howe, a 20-year police veteran and pilot of the helicopter, was honored as a dedicated police officer and a devoted father and husband. In addition to his wife, Howe leaves three children, Stefani, 14, Robert, 10, and Brent, 8. In memory of the two officers, Police Department officials said the unit designation “Air 12,” which had been assigned to Champe and Howe, will no longer be used by the department. Howey, Jeff In Memory Of Jeff Howey Topeka Police Department, KS End of watch: 2000-06-13 Aircraft: Schweizer S300C Pilot Officer Jeff William Howey, 37, died in a crash while assisting on a burglary call in southwest Topeka. The helicopter was orbiting the scene as officers were inside investigating the alarm. Witnesses said the helicopter was circling in a tight pattern when dispatchers received a radio call from the helicopter stating they were going down. The aircraft spun and crashed into a field bursting into flames. Officer Charles Joseph “Joey” Bohlender Jr., 33, the TFO, a nine-year veteran of the department, was also killed. Officer Howey was an eight-year veteran of the Topeka Police Department. He joined the department in August 1992 and served in the uniform patrol division until transferring to the helicopter unit in October 1998. He received the department’s Commendation Bar in 1996. A U.S. Army veteran, Officer Howey served a combined seventeen years with the U.S. Army and U.S. Army National Guard. He is survived by his wife Nina and two daughters. Hughes, Tremain In Memory Of Tremain Hughes New York State Police, NY End of watch: 1932-01-15 Aircraft: Fleet bi-plane Pilot Lieutenant Tremain M. Hughes died while operating a Fleet biplane owned by the New York State Police. He was following the Cazenovia-Peterboro Road when the plane struck an elm tree, crashed, and burst into flames. Lieutenant Hughes was trapped in the rear cockpit of the burning plane, while Corporal Theophlius Gaines was thrown clear of the wreck and killed instantly. Corporal Gaines, a communications expert, was being transported from SP Batavia to SP Oneida for a teletypewriter system inspection. The District Commander for the Southern District, Superintendent George Fraser, said the two men were conducting a routine cannabis reconnaissance flight. Hughes, Richard In Memory Of Richard Hughes U.S. Coast Guard, CA End of watch: 1997-06-08 Aircraft: HH-65A Dolphin Responding to a sailing vessel taking on water at night the crew of CG-6549 perished in poor weather conditions and high seas. It is believed that the aircraft impacted the water while attempting to make an approach to the vessel. The aircraft was crewed by AD3 Richard L. Hughes, LT Jeffrey F. Crane (CG Aviator #3188), LTJG Charles W. Thigpen IV (CG Aviator #3310), and ASM3 James G. Caines. All were lost. Jameson, Brent In Memory Of Brent Jameson Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department, CA End of watch: 1980-10-23 Aircraft: Hughes 500c - "Angel II" At approximately 8:50 p.m. on October 23, 1980, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department helicopter crashed and burned in a vineyard located just north of River Road, ½ mile south of the Sonoma County Airport. Both the pilot, Deputy Sheriff Brent Jameson and, co-pilot, Deputy Sheriff Bliss Magly, were killed instantly upon impact. At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Thursday evening, the sheriff’s department helicopter had responded to assist in an earlier incident wherein a California Highway Patrol Officer had been shot at. The helicopter was summoned to assist in an area search of Ludwig Avenue as the suspect had fled into the rural countryside. The Highway Patrol Officer was not injured, and a short time later a suspect identified as Alfredo C. Fernandez, 23, was arrested and charged with attempted murder. Jameson and his wife, Marcille, resided in Rincon Valley, Santa Rosa. After his death, Jameson’s wife gave birth to their daughter, Julie. He is also survived by his parents, Darol and Veva Jameson; brother, Stephen; and sister, Mary. His parents reside in Petaluma. Jameson attended St. Vincent Elementary School, St. Vincent High School and graduated in 1968. He attended Santa Rosa Junior College and graduated from there with an Associate Arts degree in 1970. He also had attended the University of San Francisco. His previous employers included: patrolman for Novato Police Department from July 1971 to July 1974; appointed as deputy sheriff on July 29, 1974 for Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department; resident deputy for the North Coast and Central Coast Area from 1975-1978; assigned to Main Office of the Sheriff’s Department Patrol Division from 1978-1979; relief helicopter observer from 1978-1979; chief observer (full time) effective February 24, 1979; received his advanced certificate from the California Peace Officers Standards and Training. Johnson, Horton In Memory Of Horton Johnson U.S. Coast Guard, HI End of watch: 1982-01-07 Aircraft: Sikorsky HH-52A Seaguard It was 4 a.m. when the helicopter lifted off from Barbers Point Air Station in torrential rains and heavy winds. They were responding to a distress call from the Pan Am, a 74-foot fishing boat that was taking on water off Maui and was in danger of sinking. By 5:15 a.m., the Coast Guard had lost radio contact with the crew. Almost nine hours later, another helicopter discovered the wreckage on a steep ridge in Moloka’I’s Wailau Valley. The entire crew died in the crash. The aircraft was crewed by LCDR Horton W. Johnson (CG Aviator #1635), LT Colleen A. Cain (CG Aviator #1988), and AD2 David L. Thompson. Karl, Friedrich In Memory Of Friedrich Karl U.S. Border Patrol, AZ End of watch: 1973-10-04 Aircraft: unknown airplane Both Airplane Pilot Friedrich Karl and his observer, Senior Patrol Agent John S. Blue, were stationed at Yuma, Arizona, when they were killed in an airplane crash.The officers were on a signcutting and aircraft patrol assignment, having departed from the Yuma County Airport at approximately 6:00 a.m., on October 4, 1973. The flight also served to acquaint Senior Patrol Agent Blue with portions of the Yuma Sector since he had transferred there a short time before. After some five hours of fight, the officers landed at the Stoker Company airport at Tacna, Arizona, for a rest stop and to communicate with units from the Tacna Station relative to patrol plans and operations. At approximately 12:00 noon, shortly after take-off from Tacna, the airplane struck a static line near the top of 52-foot poles of the Wellton Irrigation District power line. Contact of the landing gear with the static line caused the plane to flip, invert, and fall to the ground in an upside-down position. Both of the officers were killed instantly upon impact. Kaya, Hakan In Memory Of Hakan Kaya Antalya Police, Turkey End of watch: 2006-07-19 Aircraft: MD600 A police helicopter flying over the Antalya coast crashed in the late afternoon in the center of the city. The helicopter, a MD600N, was carrying five top level members of the police force, all of whom were killed in the accident. The helicopter was piloted by Chief Police Officer, Pilot Hakan Kaya and Chief Police Officer, Pilot Kudret Calik. It is believed that the pilots were attempting to make an emergency landing at a nearby football stadium, but landed short in the street. The aircraft exploded on impact. Kaya, 35, graduated from the police academy in 1993, and had been assigned to the aviation department since 1998. Kee, Donald In Memory Of Donald Kee U.S. Border Patrol, TX End of watch: 1954-06-23 Aircraft: unknown airplane Patrol Inspector Donald Kee’s official station was Mission, Texas; however, at the time of his death, he was on official detail, assigned to the Special Mobile Task Force with headquarters at McAllen, Texas. This task force was engaged in a special program conducted by the Service to bring the illegal alien situation under control. On July 23, 1954, Patrol Inspector Kee was assigned to serve as observer during a flight wherein the aircraft worked in conjunction with ground units checking laborers on farms in the vicinity of Rio Grande City, Texas. The aircraft was piloted by William F. Buckelew. The joint operation had resulted in ten aliens being taken into custody by the ground teams. The patrol aircraft had Just made a low pass over a cotton field near the Rio Grande River and was banking to return to the field when it was seen to spin and plunge into the river. The plane burst into flames which hampered rescue operations by officers and bystanders in the area. Several persons were hospitalized suffering from burns sustained in the rescue efforts. Patrol Inspector Kee was killed instantly. A Justice of the Peace held an inquest upon arrival at the scene of the accident and pronounced Inspector Kee dead. Pilot Buckelew was still alive when removed from the plane but was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Kemp, William In Memory Of William Kemp U.S. Coast Guard, AK End of watch: 1986-11-02 Aircraft: Sikorsky HH-3F Pelican This crew was on a night SAR case to Old Harbor, AK in very poor weather. While circumnavigating Ugak Island, a small island with high terrain just off the main island of Kodiak, it is believed that they encountered unexpected weather in the form of heavy winds and rain. The aircraft impacted a high cliff and fell to the beach below to be consumed by a post-crash fire. The aircraft was crewed by AT3 William G. Kemp, LT Michael Clement Dollahite (CG Aviator #2148), LT Robert L. Carson, Jr., CDR David Meurice Rockmore, USPHS, ASM2 Kevin M. McCraken, and HS3 Ralph D. King. Kennedy, Robert In Memory Of Robert Kennedy Boone Police Department, NC End of watch: 2002-07-17 Aircraft: Cessna 172 TFO Major Robert C. Kennedy, of the Boone Police Department, was killed when the Civil Air Patrol plane he was flying in crashed at Edenton, North Carolina while searching for marijuana plants. Also killed were Pilot Sergeant Anthony Scott Futrell of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and Deputy Richard Edward Ashley Jr. of the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office. Major Robert Stephen “Bob” Kennedy was born July 8, 1956 in Stanley County to the late James Ray Kennedy Sr., and Connie Furr Kennedy. Major Kennedy was Assistant Chief with the Boone Police Department. He was the Commander of the Boone Police Department SWAT team and Dive team. He was a graduate of Pfeiffer University and the FBI National Academy. He was a member of the Federal Narcotics Officers Association and a life member and Past President of the North Carolina Narcotics Officers Association. He was a 1st Lieutenant with the Civil Air Patrol and the Commander of the Boone Squadron. He was also a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Major Kennedy was on the scholarship committee of the Children of Police Officers Who Died in the Line of Duty Fund, and a Board Member of the Underage Alcohol Initiative. He was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church in Oakboro, NC, and a member of Snow Lodge #363 AF & AM. Major Robert Kennedy is survived by his wife, Kerri Dowdy Kennedy; a son, Kyle; his mother, Connie Furr Kennedy of Oakboro, NC; one sister, Linda Kennedy Kimrey and husband Dale of Albemarle, NC; and his mother and father-in-law, Jimmy and Jackie Dowdy of Grandy, NC. Years later you stayed the same amazing person and turned in to a wonderful dad. I wish you could be around to tell all of your adventures to my little one on the way but Kyle is just like you and will pass your attributes down to his new cousin. Ketchum, David In Memory Of David Ketchum Costa Mesa Police Department, CA End of watch: 1987-03-10 Aircraft: MD500E Officer David Ketchum and Officer Libolt were killed in a mid-air collision with a Newport Beach Police helicopter. In a double funeral that drew an estimated 1,150 uniformed officers, Costa Mesa Police Chief David Snowden said the call signal Eagle II will be retired in honor of fallen pilots James David “Dave” Ketchum and John W. “Mike” Libolt. The retirement will leave a numerical gap in Costa Mesa’s helicopter division – a reminder of the void left by the two deaths. “They died making Costa Mesa a safer place to be, “Snowden said his voice faltering with emotion. “As they would have wished, we’ll continue to patrol the skies of our city.” About 3,500 mourners – including federal, state and local law enforcement officers from San Francisco to Calexico – crowded the main hall and three overflow rooms at Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa. Ketchum and Libolt, both 15-year veterans, are the first Costa Mesa police officers killed in the line of duty in the department’s 33-year history. As part of the memorial service, the crowd moved into the chapel courtyard where police helicopters from throughout the county flew overhead in a V-formation, with gaps left for the missing pilots. Kievernagel, Joseph In Memory Of Joseph Kievernagel Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, CA End of watch: 2005-07-13 Aircraft: AEC EC120 Deputy Joseph M. Kievernagel was killed on July 13, 2005, while piloting the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department’s Helicopter, Star 6. Deputy Joe Kievernagel, Deputy Kevin Blount and Deputy Eric Henrikson took off from Mather Air Field for routine patrol of Sacramento County. They soon responded to a burglary call at a Folsom business. After they cleared the call they flew over the Lake Natoma area where hundreds of people had gathered to get relief from the intense heat being experienced in the Sacramento area. What happened next will remain in the hearts and minds of the Sheriff’s Department personnel forever. Star 6 developed catastrophic engine trouble. Witnesses reported that it seemed that Deputy Kievernagel tried in vain to control the craft, Deputy Kievernagel desperately tried to land the ship somewhere away from the crowded lake area. Star 6 crashed into a nearby hillside and rolled. Deputies Kievernagel and Blount were killed. Deputy Eric Henrikson was critically injured. Both officers were highly regarded professionals and truly dedicated to their assignments in Air Operations. I don’t admire many people but Joey was the 1 person I admired the most. He was an incredible son, brother, husband and friend who enjoyed flying more than anything else. He will forever be my “Hero” and he will never ever be forgotten. I miss you, and love you and you will forever be in my thoughts, I just wish we’d had more time. I dont think I ever had contact with him where he did not leave me without a good laff. Even when, as an observer, he and his pilot did an off site landing to assist me when I was fighting with a 5150. Kiev jumps out and runs up to me with his helmut on. I was so focused on the guy I had cuffed I dint notice the helo land. I said where did you come from. Kiev just pointed straight up in the air. Mebbe you had to be there. King, Ralph In Memory Of Ralph King U.S. Coast Guard, AK End of watch: 1986-11-02 Aircraft: Sikorsky HH-3F Pelican This crew was on a night SAR case to Old Harbor, AK in very poor weather. While circumnavigating Ugak Island, a small island with high terrain just off the main island of Kodiak, it is believed that they encountered unexpected weather in the form of heavy winds and rain. The aircraft impacted a high cliff and fell to the beach below to be consumed by a post-crash fire. The aircraft was crewed by HS3 Ralph D. King, LT Michael Clement Dollahite (CG Aviator #2148), LT Robert L. Carson, Jr., CDR David Meurice Rockmore, USPHS, ASM2 Kevin M. McCraken, and AT3 William G. Kemp. King, Matthew In Memory Of Matthew King Bernalillo County Fire Department, NM End of watch: 2022-07-16 Aircraft: Bell Uh-1H On July 16, 2022 at approximately 7:20 pm, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department helicopter known as Metro 2 crashed just outside of Las Vegas, NM. The helicopter and its crew were assisting with a wildfire in the area, providing bucket drops and other air logistics needs to fire crews on the ground. All four members of the crew, Undersheriff and Pilot Larry Koren, Tactical Flight Officer Lieutenant Fred Beers, Tactical Flight Officer Deputy Michael Levison and Rescue Specialist Lieutenant Matthew King, perished in the crash. Kirkland, Mark In Memory Of Mark Kirkland U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, MN End of watch: 1977-08-25 Aircraft: unknown airplane On August 25, 1977, Special Agents Mark A. Kirkland and Trenwith S. Basford were killed in northern Minnesota as the result of an airplane crash into Dewey Lake. SA Basford was piloting his personally owned plane, which had been approved for official use. The Agents were assisting Agents of the Duluth Resident Agency in conducting an aerial surveillance when the crash occurred. At the time of his death, SA Basford was 60 years old and had served over 35 years in the FBI. SA Kirkland was 33 years of age. There was a book written about it by David Wise, called “Cassidy’s Run”. I love and am proud of my father, and know I will see him again. Kline, Marvin In Memory Of Marvin Kline Kern County Sheriff’s Department, CA End of watch: 1986-08-16 Aircraft: unknown airplane August 16, 1986 was scheduled as a training session for the Sheriff’s Department Aerosquadron and Search and Rescue units. The mission objectives were to see how a fixed-wing aircraft could be used to search for drowning victims in the Kern River, state certify Ray Bockman’s search dog in a fixed-wing aircraft, and acclimate Sergeant Marvin Kline in a small fixed-wing aircraft since he was second-in-command for the Search and Rescue unit and had never flown in a small aircraft. Doug Moonen, the volunteer Aerosquadron pilot with 12,000 hours of flight time, was piloting his Cessna 182 along the Kern River at a low altitude. Sergeant Marvin Kline was on the passenger side and Roy Bockman and his dog Kelly were in the back of the plane. The team was searching for drowning victims in the Kern River from the mouth of the canyon to Hart Park. Apparently, Doug Moonen forgot about the low electrical wires across the Kern River on the west end of Hart Park and piloted the plane into the wires. The investigation revealed Doug Moonen’s airplane clipped the electrical wires forcing the aircraft to the ground in a violent motion striking trees and killing all three men and the dog on impact. Doug Moonen’s aircraft came to rest on the north side of Mirror Lake approximately 200 yards from the west entrance of Hart Park. A monument now stands at the crash site to honor the four members of the plane crash. Sergeant Kline had been on the Kern County Sheriff’s Department for 18 years. He was gifted with the unique ability as a supervisor to create a fun positive “team” work environment that was still very professional and “all business.” It was not until many years later that I reflect on how lucky I was to have such a positive supervisor as a young deputy sheriff. I have no doubt that had his team survived the plane crash, he would have been the first one to suggest that Doug and Ray go out together with him and celebrate. That was not to be the case, but they were three able men and a pleasure to have worked with. Thanks Sarg! Klumpp, Alan In Memory Of Alan Klumpp U.S. Customs Service, GA End of watch: 1993-07-14 Aircraft: Sikorsky UH-60 Pilot Alan J. Klumpp [32] died when his helicopter struck a power line over the Altamaha River while on a drug mission near Brunswick, Georgia. Special Agent William Levi DeLoach [29], Criminal Investigator David DeLoach [31], and Pilot Carl Richard Talafous [40] also died in the crash. Thoughts and Memories of Alan Klumpp Frances Cozza A day doesn’t go by when I don’t think of him. He was an outstanding friend,pilot and flight instructor. He encouraged me to go to ERAU, which I did. I knew Alan had a destiny to carry out his dream of flying. I loved him so much. One of the most memorable things he said to me was, “You keep going when I know most people would have given up a long time ago.” I share this sentiment with those of you who read this. Life is hard when you lose someone you love, like Alan, but I hope he remains in your heart as he will in mine. Patty Ayala Alan was a very nice and polite young man, I met him in 1987 while he was stationed in El Salvador(my homeland). He was very proud of his achievements, it is so sad to know he died so young. Requiescat in pace, con amor eterno….. Paul Welch Alan was a good friend of mine. I knew him from ERAU – we were both in Army ROTC. He went on to flight school while I was stuck on the ground with imperfect eyesight. It’s hard to believe it’s been more than 10 yrs since he died. Knox, Jason In Memory Of Jason Knox Houston Police Department, TX End of watch: 2020-05-02 Aircraft: MD 500E On May 2, 2020, at about 0200 hours, Police Officer Chase Cormier, (Pilot in Command) and Police Officer Jason Knox (Tactical Flight Officer) were responding to a possible body in the bayou in Helicopter 75 Fox. While on the call, the aircraft crashed into an apartment complex clubhouse on 17400 Imperial Valley. Both officers were cut out of the aircraft by the Houston Fire Department and transported by Life Flight to the hospital. Officer Knox sustained serious injuries and later passed away the same morning. Officer Knox began his Law Enforcement career with the Harris County Constables PCT 5 in August 2006. Two years later in September 2008, Jason served with the Spring Valley Police Department for three years. In 2011, Officer Knox continued his career with the Houston Police Department where he served as a Patrol Officer ensuring the citizens he served received prompt and quality service. In 2016, Jason served as a leader in the Office of Public Affairs representing the Houston Police Department in a positive and professional manner heavily involving himself in the expanding and improving the relationships between police and the community. Jason was a constant fixture in the community demanding more of himself to ensure relational policing was not only an external goal, but also an internal goal, leading by example. He became a positive role model in the community and within the department. In January of 2019, Officer Knox, achieved one of his professional goals by becoming a full-time member of the Air & Marine Division as a Tactical Flight Officer (TFO). During his short time as a Full-Time TFO, he was recognized as a recipient of the FLIR Vision Award (Forward Looking Infra-Red camera) placing second for an OUTSTANDING suspect capture in 2019, by use of specialized equipment used on the aircraft. In 2019, Jason was a TFO on two separate occasions and was recognized for a Life Saving Award for locating a Harris County Deputy who almost drowned in high waters as well as a fire fighter who was responding to the floods and got swept away by the water. This year, Officer Knoxâ€™s FLIR capture was submitted to the National FLIR Award for an EXECPTIONAL capture with the specialized equipment by leading the ground officers to the suspect who had submerged himself in water and only leaving the tip of his nose to show through. Those captures led him to establish himself as a leader and a mentor to other TFOs in and outside the Division to assist in providing specialized knowledge to continue to assist in keeping the officers and the community safe. Between March 2018 and May 2020, Jason has had a total of 37 FLIR captures. In the years that Officer Knox has been with the Houston Police Department he has received a total of 22 Commendations that include the Community and the Supervisors of the Department. Jason leaves behind his wife Keira, son Cooper (6) and daughter Eliza (3). Jason was a kind and gentle man and was always lending a helping hand around the hangar, with the department and in his own community.
