Hardigan was serving as an observer in a small aircraft during a search and rescue operation for two lost cross county skiers. The operation was being conducted in the snowy range area about 25 miles west of Laramie. The aircraft had just spotted the skiers and was making a pass over the skiers when it struck a power line. Thoughts and Memories of Patrick Harrington PO Robert Conner (105th Pct-Retired) I came out of the Police Academy with Pat with the class of April 1964. We were assigned to the 105th precinct. Pat loved aviation and tried many times to get into the Aviation Unit. He rode with me in my steady radio car sector many times and it was always a pleasure to work with him. I flew with him once when he was working on his Instructors Rating. The last time I spoke with Pat, we were in the station house, late afternoon. He told me “Bob, I am going”! He finally made aviation after being bumped once or twice. I learned of his death while I was enroute to work, on my car radio. I wrote a eulogy that was published anonymously in Spring 3100. It verbalize our collective tears. “A star has fallen from our sky, A soft spoken lad, too young to die. Fond of flying, a lust for life, devoted father with loving wife. He worked among us quite awhile, sharing his wit and gently smile. Always first to share a joke or ease the burden of other folk. His goal in life, newly won, a policeman pilot was Harrington. Flying the skies, close to God, no more lonely streets to trod. How quickly God called him away, leaving so many things to say. Accept this boy Almighty God, the Red Baron of our squad. Harris, Robert In Memory Of Robert Harris Nassau County Police, NY End of watch: 1978-05-17 Aircraft: Bell 47GB3 Sergeant Robert Harris, while operating a Nassau County Police Department helicopter on May 17, 1978, at about 1800 hours in the vicinity of Southern State Parkway and Wantagh Avenue, was killed when the aircraft developed engine trouble and crashed. Sergeant Harris declined an emergency landing at a school because children were nearby. The helicopter crashed as he attempted to locate an alternate location to land. Harrolle, Bruce In Memory Of Bruce Harrolle Arizona Department of Public Safety, AZ End of watch: 2008-10-13 Aircraft: unknown aircraft The Department of Public Safety Ranger Flight Paramedic who was killed in Sedona Monday by a helicopter rotor blade has been identified as 36-year-old Bruce Harrolle of Mesa. Harrolle was reportedly attempting to escort two stranded hikers near Bear Mountain to a helicopter at about 4 p.m., according to DPS. One of the hikers entered the chopper safely. Harrolle was attempting to assist the second hiker towards the helicopter, he was struck by a rotor blade and killed. The second hiker was not hurt. Harvey, Charles In Memory Of Charles Harvey Tennessee National Guard, TN End of watch: 1998-06-24 Aircraft: Bell OH-58A+ Pilot Captain Charles Harvey was killed while searching for a marijuana grow site. TFO Stephen Allen Bowman, a forest service law enforcement officer from Greenville TN, also died. The accident site was found about 100 miles north of Knoxville, TN, after a three day search. He never was too tired to help out a friend or stranger in need. He was always first in line if he thought it would make a difference. He volunteered for a mission on Bristol Mountain that cost him his life. I’ll miss my friend’s sense of humor and his crazy laugh. They broke the mold when they made Charley Harvey and there will never be another one like him. Charley we miss you every single day. We’ll never forget you! You are a true hero. Haynie, Lester In Memory Of Lester Haynie U.S. Border Patrol, AZ End of watch: 1985-06-14 Aircraft: unknown airplane On the morning of June 14, 1985, Pilot Lester L. Haynie had been working with ground units 12 miles west of Yuma, Arizona. Having apprehended five aliens at Dunes Siding, Pilot Haynie radioed the ground units that he was flying to another siding. There were no witnesses to the crash which occurred at 7:51 a.m., reported at 8:18 a.m. by a Southern Pacific Railroad engineer. The Border Patrol plane was upside down under San Diego Power and Light cables in Imperial County, California, 100 yards north of the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks near Dunes Siding, two miles west of Sidewinder Road. Hehl, Erin In Memory Of Erin Hehl Illinois State Police, IL End of watch: 1997-10-30 Aircraft: Eurocopter AS350 Trooper Erin Hehl, 34, died while receiving flight training at Frankfort Airport at around 0345 hours. The aircraft tipped, rolled over and burst into flames. Also killed was Pilot George Kurelic, a civilian who had contracts with both the State and Chicago police. Trooper Hehl, who had been a unit TFO throughout its two year existence, gained a helicopter rating in mid-September and had 70 hours flight time logged. She was an 11-year veteran of the state police, and the first woman to work in the department’s aviation unit. She also had worked in the state police marine unit, making her the first female trooper to serve on land, sea and air. She was highly respected by her colleagues and by the citizens she served, as demonstrated by the 1,300 mourners who attended her funeral and the five-mile long procession of cars that followed her casket to the cemetery. Thoughts and Memories of Erin Hehl Benita Palenske I never had the chance to meet Erin because she passed before I met my husband, but my husband Jeff talks of her often and says she was a very loving and fun person. He said she had a warm and tender heart and was proud to be an officer. I wish I would have met her I know I would have loved her…not as much as he did but I know we would have been great friends. Jeff said they shared a lot of laughs and he misses her dearly and thinks of her often. We love you Erin and jeff misses you so much….keep singing with the angels and we will see you in heaven. Trooper Scott Moran I worked in the helicopter unit with Erin, during the night shift. Night shift is when most pursuits and criminal searches happen. Erin was very professional in her duties as observer, when I worked with her. She was very articulate with both crewmembers and ground units. She could walk officers into a criminal and affect the arrest every time. She came to have a great reputation among officers from every jurisdiction, since our search would broadcast throughout the entire Chicago area (on ISPERN). They knew if they heard her voice that the bad guy may run, but they could not hide from “Air One”. She was very proud to be a trooper and especially an “Air One” unit member.She was very supportive and helpful to me as I applied with the Illinois State Police. I know she must have been equally proud to begin her flight training, when I was beginning my training as a trooper. Henderson, Ned In Memory Of Ned Henderson U.S. Border Patrol, TX End of watch: 1945-11-18 Aircraft: Unknown autogyro Ned D. Henderson, Autogiro Pilot, died on November 18, 1945, from injuries he received two days earlier when the autogiro he was piloting crashed near Sullivan City, Texas. Pilot Henderson was enroute to his official station at McAllen, Texas, following a detail to San Antonio. He was alone in the plane when it crashed at about 1:00 p.m., November 16, 1945. A witness to the accident, Mr. Francisco Flores, stated that he noticed the aircraft coming from the west just before or about the time it hit an electric high line. The autogiro hit the ground and turned over about two times before it came to rest. Mr. Flores stopped his truck and ran over to the aircraft. He rushed over to Pilot Henderson who was rolling on the ground just outside of the autogiro, his clothes and gloves on fire. Mr. Flores extinguished the flames and then improvised a shade from a blanket he had in his truck. Pilot Henderson was later removed to the McAllen Municipal Hospital by ambulance. He was crewing the first Scottish police helicopter, operated by Strathclyde Police, when it suffered engine failure during a search for armed robbers in a heavy snowstorm. The aircraft collided with a building and fell to the ground, seriously injuring all the other crew members. Malcolm had previously served with the Metropolitan Police, and had worked on uniform and CID duties in Strathclyde before transferring to the air support unit. Hereford, Terry In Memory Of Terry Hereford U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, OH End of watch: 1982-12-16 Aircraft: unknown airplane On December 16, 1982, Special Agents Terry Burnett Hereford, Charles L. Ellington, Robert W. Conners, and Michael James Lynch were killed in a Bureau airplane accident near Montgomery, Ohio. The Agents were accompanying a bank fraud and embezzlement subject, Carl Henry Johnson, and an individual from the law firm representing Johnson to Cincinnati. They were attempting to locate $50,000 in embezzled money, which Johnson had hidden in that area. The plane, piloted by SAs Hereford and Conners, crashed on approach to Cincinnati’s Lunken Airport near Montgomery, and all aboard were killed. There were indications that the aircraft encountered altitude read-out problems, was flying at a low altitude, and hit some wires before it went down. Hernandez, Adolfo In Memory Of Adolfo Hernandez California Highway Patrol, CA End of watch: 1975-06-07 Aircraft: Hiller UH-12 Officers Adolfo M. Hernandez and Frederick W. Enright were patrolling in the CHP helicopter at 2:45 p.m. when it crashed and burned in the Fremont area east of Highway 17. Enright, the 31-year-old pilot, and Hernandez, the 35-year-old observer, were both killed instantly. Witnesses said the helicopter went into a steep dive, and went approximately 50 to 75 feet off the ground, flipped over and then crashed. Investigation into the cause of the accident determined there was a mechanical failure in the controls that affected the pilot´s ability to control the horizontal attitude of the aircraft. Howard, Frank In Memory Of Frank Howard Mojave County Sheriff, AZ End of watch: 1973-11-01 Aircraft: Cessna 172 Skyhawk Deputy Howard and Deputy Lloyd Heilman were killed in an aircraft accident while searching for escapees from the Mohave County Jail. The two deputies were killed when their airplane crashed in the Cerbat Mountains during a multi-agency search for the five escapees. The fugitives were caught the next day. He served his country valiantly during WWII and went on to become an attorney and a judge after the war.We moved to Kingman, AZ in the early 60’s and he set up a private practice. Being an avid pilot with his own Cessna 172, he was a member fo the air posse, using his airplane to assist local and state law enforcement agencies with situations in Mohave County when needed.He was called out early on the morning of November 8, 1973 to search for multiple accused murders who had escaped from the Mohave County Jail that morning. Accompanied by Deputy Don Heilman (sp?), my father began his search shortly after daybreak. They took off around 7:00 a.m. and began searching the mountain ranges near town. Nobody knows for sure what happened, but the airplane he was piloting crashed in the mountains north of town, both were killed instantly.My mother said that the last thing he said as he left the house was, “I’ll be back… they need my help”.I thank my father for showing me that gallentry and honor are the only things that you can carry to your grave. He also showed me that law enforcement agencies are staffed by tireless, dedicated individuals who approach their duties with passion and commitment. Every time I see a law enforcement officer, from any branch, I think of my father and his words of wisdom.I would also like to offer my sincere thanks to all law enforcement officers for their dedication and often thankless pursuits to keep the population safe.Thank you.
