Forbes, James In Memory Of James Forbes Seattle Police Department, WA End of watch: 1974-06-21 Aircraft: unknown helicopter On June 21, 1974, during the afternoon, Seattle Police Officer James M. Forbes died in the line of duty. Officer Forbes was a Police Helicopter Obsever in “Air 3,” which was piloted by Officer James St. Delore. The officers were responding to a shooting in the south end of the city. As they flew above Beacon Hill, the helicopter collided with a Cessna 150 that was landing at Boeing Field. The mid-air collision killed both officers and the two occupants of the plane. Officer James M. Forbes was survived by his wife Belva, sons John and Jack, and daughter Jennifer. Formisano, Maurizio In Memory Of Maurizio Formisano Italian State Police, Italy End of watch: 2005-05-11 Aircraft: P-68 Observer Officer Maurizio Formisano, 37, was killed when his aircraft crashed during a routine anti-immigration and smuggling patrol. The aircraft crashed into the Adriatic Sea off the mouth of the River Sangro between Pescara and the Tremiti Islands. Fox, Ronnie In Memory Of Ronnie Fox McAlester Police Department, OK End of watch: 1981-06-30 Aircraft: unknown airplane On Thursday morning, July 30, 1981, Corporal Ronnie Nile Fox, 38, McAlester Detective David Sheehan, 28, and Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, Agent Bill Morgan, 29, were flying in a single engine aircraft looking for marijuana patches. About 8:20 A.M. the plane, piloted by Agent Morgan, crashed in the foothills of the Jack Fork Mountains, six miles northeast of Daisy, just inside Pittsburg County killing all three officers. Fuller, Ronald In Memory Of Ronald Fuller Richmond Police Department, CA End of watch: 1984-07-05 Aircraft: Cessna 172 Two Richmond policemen on an air surveillance mission were killed July 5 when their Cessna 172 collided with another small plane and plummeted into a warehouse. Ronald H. Fuller, a narcotics officer, and William C. Whitty, the pilot, died instantly. They were just beginning a narcotics enforcement operation at the time of the accident. Fuller, 35, was a 10-year veteran of the department and had worked about a year in the narcotics investigation division. He was described as a quiet, modest and unassuming man who was “an outstanding officer.” Fuller is survived by his wife Vickie and three children. Fuller, Robert In Memory Of Robert Fuller U.S. Coast Guard, FL End of watch: 2001-02-01 Aircraft: PA 32 300 The Coast Guard family lost two members on the evening of February 1, when the Auxiliary aircraft piloted by Casey Purvis went down during a routine exercise. Both Aircraft Commander, Casey Purvis and Robert Fuller, Air Observer, were lost when the plane went down. The two men were practicing an “intercept” mission over Florida Bay. The Auxiliary aircraft, a PA 32 300 Piper was participating with a Coast Guard HU-25C Falcon jet. The training mission was one that both aircraft had performed numerous times. During the exercise communications with the Auxiliary aircraft were lost. As soon as contact was lost with the aircraft, a search was launched which continued through the night. The following morning the wreckage was located and later that day confirmation that they had been lost with the aircraft was made. In accordance with their wishes, the two were buried at sea in separate services. The burial for Robert Fuller was held on Tuesday, following a funeral service at Miami Shores Presbyterian Church. Family and friends attended as the USCG Cutter, Point Glass served as the platform for the service at sea. Two Auxiliary vessels, boats from the North Miami Police unit, and a 41-foot patrol boat accompanied the POINT GLASS. The burial service was performed by CDR Mark Jumper, Seventh District Chaplain. A farewell fly-over was performed by an Auxiliary aircraft, piloted by Sam DeFasio and a Coast Guard HU-25C Falcon jet. Futrell, A. Scott In Memory Of A. Scott Futrell Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, NC End of watch: 2002-07-17 Aircraft: Cessna 172 Pilot Sergeant Anthony Scott Futrell of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department was killed when the Civil Air Patrol plane he was flying crashed at Edenton, North Caroline while searching for marijuana plants. Also killed were TFO Major Robert C. Kennedy of the Boone Police Department, and Deputy Richard Edward Ashley Jr. of the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office. Sergeant Futrell was born on May 21, 1964 in Newport News, VA, to Robert Carter Futrell and Phyllis Parham Futrell. He graduated from East Mecklenburg High School and then served in the United States Army with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC. He then went on to Gardner Webb University and graduated with honors and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. He joined the Mecklenburg County Police Department in July 1987. He was on the training staff at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Training Academy. He was promoted to sergeant in March of 1999 and served as a member of the Department’s Swat Team and ALERT Team. He had headed the department’s Helicopter Unit since December 2001. Sergeant Futrell loved flying and boating and was a pilot volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol which collaborated with other officers in drug eradication efforts. Sergeant Anthony Scott Futrell is survived by his wife, Karen Player Futrell; a daughter, Christy ; a son, David; his parents, Robert and Phyllis Futrell of Charlotte, NC; two brothers, Stephen Futrell of Spartanburg, SC and Keith Futrell of Charlotte, NC; and his grandmothers, Mrs. Robert Lee Parham of Capron, VA and Mrs. James Paul Futrell of Hampton, VA. My job as his FTO was not only easy, but a joy. We both went to work and had fun all day. Our police car was full of laughter most of the time. The stories we shared I will never forget. Scott was not just my rookie, but became one of my best friends. I miss him more than most people will ever know. We always joked about how he would even give our Mom a ticket if she was breaking the law. He loved his job and and took it very seriously and he loved the people he worked with. He left behind a loving wife who has never remarried and (5) children, one of which was only 9 months old (which,incidently was the only boy, Donald Wyatt Gentry, Jr. and he looks exactly like Daddy) The accident changed our lives drastically but God has a purpose for everything and can and has brought good from a bad situation. Dad left behind a good name, because even to this day (36 years later) people still remember him and what a good man he was. Gerling, Stanley In Memory Of Stanley Gerling Iowa State Patrol, IA End of watch: 1989-06-30 Aircraft: unknown airplane On Friday evening, June 30, 1989, the Cass County Sheriff’s Department contacted the Iowa State Patrol requesting help in locating an elderly man who had wandered away from his nursing home. Trooper/Pilot Lance G. Dietsch, 30, of Council Bluffs and Trooper Stanley E. Gerling, 34, of Atlantic responded in a Maule Patrol aircraft. The search was about to be terminated when the two troopers spotted the man in a soybean field. The airplane turned sharply, crashing vertically into the ground and killing both troopers. Troopers Dietsch and Gerling were the first aircraft fatalities since the addition of the Patrol Airwing in 1956. Gessa, Gualtiero In Memory Of Gualtiero Gessa Italian State Police, Italy End of watch: 2005-03-31 Aircraft: Agusta-Bell AB206A-1 TFO Gualtiero Gessa, 37 years, died when his helicopter crashed on a training mission near Borore, Nuoro, Sardinia. The aircraft appeared to have suffered engine problems at 40 metres [120 ft], impacted wire netting and then the ground. The tail broke off. The two pilots suffered minor injuries. It was dark and the weather was poor as this crew attempted to descend through the fog to assist the vessel in distress. The helicopter impacted the side of a cliff and the entire crew was lost. He was a commander on the LAPD, had just turned 49, and was out of the line of fire. SWAT had just incorporated the helicopter in their training, and my dad was observing a training maneuver from the ground. Things looked good, but he wanted to observe from the air. One pass and the engine stalled. The craft crashed on Dad’s side and he was killed instantly. Two other’s were burned extensively. Dad, I love you and think of you daily. Glenn, James In Memory Of James Glenn Kansas City Police Department, MO End of watch: 1969-01-10 Aircraft: Hughes 300-269B On January 10, 1969, Officer James W. Glenn was practicing maneuvers with the department helicopter, when it malfunctioned (the tail rotor failed and fuselage began to spin as it crashed.) The crash occurred at the Kansas City Timing Association drag strip near Front Street and Manchester, southeast of the Chouteau Bridge. Officer Glenn joined the Kansas City Police Department on July 16, 1960, and graduated from the police academy November 1960. Gordon, Daryl In Memory Of Daryl Gordon Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, ME End of watch: 2011-03-25 Aircraft: Cessna 185 Game Warden Daryl Gordon was killed in a plane crash in a remote area near Clear Lake in Piscataquis County. He was flying a department-owned Cessna 185 when it crashed sometime during the night on March 24, 2011. A massive search was launched and wreckage along with Warden Gordon’s body were located the following morning at approximately 9:00 am. Grant, Lou In Memory Of Lou Grant New Zealand Police Air Support Unit, New Zealand End of watch: 1993-11-27 Aircraft: Aérospatiale TwinStar AS 355 F1 Sergeant Lou Grant died when his helicopter was involved in a mid-air collision with a light civil aircraft. Also killed in the crash were Constable Alastair Sampson and TFO Ross Harvey. The accident occurred in daylight with excellent visibility, in uncontrolled airspace (class G), with both aircraft flying under visual flight rules. Both the helicopter and aeroplane were operated by Airwork (NZ), and working under contract to the New Zealand Police at the time of the accident. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission investigation found the accident occurred because neither pilot saw the other aircraft. Guider, David In Memory Of David Guider Oakland Police Department, CA End of watch: 1973-10-02 Aircraft: unknown helicopter Officers David Guider and Wendell Troyer were assigned to ARGUS, the Oakland Police helicopter, on the evening of October 2, 1973. Troyer, 47, was a 22-year veteran of the department and the pilot that evening. Guider, 26, had 4 years with Oakland Police Department. He was assigned the observer position in ARGUS. At 9:35 p.m. as they were patrolling over East Oakland, they received a dispatch directing them to assist downtown units in a robbery. As they flew west, the helicopter suddenly lost power and plummeted to the ground. The helicopter crashed in a large explosion and fire. Both officers were trapped in the flaming ARGUS and were unable to escape. The initial investigation revealed a possibility that the officers were victims of a sniper. Troyer had a gunshot wound to the head. Witnesses claimed that they heard gunshots prior to the crash of the helicopter. It was later released that the helicopter suffered a mechanical failure that resulted in the loss of power and subsequent crash. Guider was survived by his wife. Hagerty, John In Memory Of John Hagerty Florida Highway Patrol, FL End of watch: 1970-03-18 Aircraft: Piper PA-18 Trooper John Hagerty was piloting a traffic plane over Lakeland when he was struck by a low-flying U.S. Navy jet. He had served the citizens of Florida, with the Florida Highway Patrol, for 13 years. His career with FHP began October 15, 1956. He was in the 15th recruit class in Tallahassee, from October 15 to December 7, 1956. He was stationed in Frostproof, Punta Gorda, Stuart and Orlando. At the time of his death, he was 44.
