Trojahn, Charles In Memory Of Charles Trojahn New York City Police Department, NY End of watch: 1983-07-22 Aircraft: Bell 206A Officer Charles Trojahn and Officer James Rowley were killed when their helicopter was involved in a mid-air collision over Brooklyn. A sea plane struck the rear rotor of the helicopter, causing it to crash. Both officers and two of the four passengers on the sea plane were killed. The float plane was arriving on an air taxi flight to the Wall Street area of Manhattan. Officer Trojahn had been with the NYPD for 2 years. He was 27 years old. Troyer, Wendell In Memory Of Wendell Troyer Oakland Police Department, CA End of watch: 1973-10-02 Aircraft: unknown helicopter Officers Wendell Troyer and David Guider were assigned to ARGUS, the Oakland Police helicopter, on the evening of October 2, 1973. Troyer, 47, was a 22-year veteran of the department and the pilot that evening. Guider, 26, had 4 years with Oakland Police Department. He was assigned the observer position in ARGUS. At 9:35 p.m. as they were patrolling over East Oakland, they received a dispatch directing them to assist downtown units in a robbery. As they flew west, the helicopter suddenly lost power and plummeted to the ground. The helicopter crashed in a large explosion and fire. Both officers were trapped in the flaming ARGUS and were unable to escape. The initial investigation revealed a possibility that the officers were victims of a sniper. Troyer had a gunshot wound to the head. Witnesses claimed that they heard gunshots prior to the crash of the helicopter. It was later released that the helicopter suffered a mechanical failure that resulted in the loss of power and subsequent crash. Troyer was married with two children. Turner, Charles In Memory Of Charles Turner West Virginia State Police, WV End of watch: 1996-04-04 Aircraft: Bell 206L-1 While in transit from Yeager Airport to the West Virginia State Police Academy, 2nd Lt. Charles Matthew Turner [41] died when his helicopter crashed into a wooded hillside at Charleston, WV at 1034 hours. Also killed was Officer G. Wayne Childress [50]. The aircraft was reported by 30 witnesses at 300-500 feet and to have broken up in the air, with a substantial length of the tail section being found some 450 feet from the main wreckage. Tuttle, Matthew In Memory Of Matthew Tuttle Chelsea Police Department, MI End of watch: 2006-04-13 Aircraft: Robinson R22 Matthew Tuttle, a reserve police officer and full-time captain with the Chelsea Area Fire Authority, and Chelsea Police Chief Riley Scot Sumner died when their helicopter crashed during a suspect search. The crash happened in the woods near Jackson and Staebler roads in Scio Township while the two men chased a suspect who was wanted on warrants and had escaped the Michigan State Police on foot after a traffic stop. Tuttle, who also served on the Washtenaw County Hazardous Materials Response Team, was piloting his personal aircraft when the crash occurred. Tuttle was occasionally called on to use the helicopter for police business. Tuttle, a newlywed with no children, had deep roots in the community, where his parents live, as well. The 28-year-old Lima Township resident, who was also a Chelsea High School graduate, joined the fire department’s reserves in 1997, had worked the last 3 1/2 years as a part-time firefighter and fire inspector, and had been promoted to full-time captain just two weeks prior to his death. The aircraft crashed into the Adriatic Sea off the mouth of the River Sangro between Pescara and the Tremiti Islands. The pilot, Captain Carol Crosby, was seriously injured and another crew member, trainee pilot Inspector Vijiendra Lankaser, was slightly injured. Vars, Juan In Memory Of Juan Vars U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Peru End of watch: 1994-08-27 Aircraft: CASA 212-A Special Agent Juan Vars died when his aircraft crashed into dense jungle close to Puerto Pizano near Lima, Peru while on a drug assignment. Also killed were Agents Frank Fernandez, Jay Seale, Frank Wallace Jr. and Meredith Thompson, each of whom was from different sections of the US DEA. Special Agent Vars joined DEA’s Dallas Field Division in 1987 and served in the Chicago Field Division before returning to Dallas in 1988. After becoming a DEA pilot in 1990, Special Agent Vars was reassigned to the San Antonio District Office in 1991. Special Agent Vars graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute, and the University of Texas, where he received degrees in Political Science and Spanish. He was survived by his parents, Ana and William Vars and his fiancee. Special Agent Vars was posthumously awarded the DEA Administrator’s Award of Honor on May 17, 1995. Wallace, Frank In Memory Of Frank Wallace U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Peru End of watch: 1994-08-27 Aircraft: CASA 212-A Special Agent Frank Wallace Jr. died when his aircraft crashed into dense jungle close to Puerto Pizano near Lima, Peru while on a drug assignment. Special Agent Wallace began his Federal service with DEA in the Miami Field Division in 1983. Later he was assigned to the Houston Field Division and the Aviation Unit. Prior to joining DEA, Special Agent Wallace served with the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, Florida. Special Agent Wallace was survived by his wife, Yvette and a son, Matthew; by his parents, Frank, Sr. and Evelyn Wallace; and a brother and sister. Warren, Lansing In Memory Of Lansing Warren Kern County Sheriff’s Department, CA End of watch: 1983-08-16 Aircraft: unknown airplane Pilot Lansing Lloyd Warren and Reserve Deputy Ray Mallory were helping search for a lost pilot when their single-engine plane crashed in hilly terrain north of Kernville in Tulare County. More than 600 people, including many local law enforcement officers, attended funeral services for Lansing L. “Lanny” Warren, a member of the Kern County Sheriff’s Aerosquadron, at Hillcrest Mortuary Chapel. Sheriff Larry Kleier and Harold Musick officiated. The Kern County Sheriff’s Honor Guard served as casketbearers. Warren was born in Bakersfield and was a member of the Kern County Sheriff’s Reserve; Search and Rescue, the Elks in Wofford Heights and the Moose Lodge in Lake Isabella. He was all that was needed. Lanny was the ultimate search and rescue member. He know the Kernville area like the back of his hand. He had worked areas where the victims would be holed up. He went the extra distance to do the job right. He was survived by his wife, Barbara, of Wofford Heights; daughter Shawn of Bakersfield; his mother, Edna Warren of Bakersfield; and a stepson, Matthew Luke of Wofford Heights. White, George In Memory Of George White U.S. Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, AZ End of watch: 1973-03-25 Aircraft: unknown Special Agent Pilot George E White, of the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (BNDD), was killed on March 25, 1973, after his plane hit a power line near Tucson, Arizona. He was 31 years of age at the time of his death. George White graduated from Utah State University in 1963, with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics. Prior to joining BNDD, White was a decorated Air Force pilot who served eight years in Vietnam as a squadron leader and fighter pilot instructor. As Captain, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Medal with 26 oak leaf clusters, and a Bronze Star. Special Agent White joined BNDD in January 1972, and after basic agent training in Washington, D.C., was assigned to the Tucson District Office. Special Agent White was recognized with a Special Achievement Award for his work on the notorious Dominguez Family of Sonora, Mexico. Whiteman, Chance In Memory Of Chance Whiteman Tulsa Police Department, OK End of watch: 1982-03-26 Aircraft: Hughes 300C Officer Chance Whiteman died when the police helicopter he was piloting crashed while assisting patrol units during a pursuit. Also killed was Officer Kelly L. Smythe. Radio contact was lost with the helicopter during the pursuit. The helicopter struck a tree and crashed a half-mile west of U.S. 75 just south of 66th Street North. The driver of the car was arrested. Whitty, William In Memory Of William Whitty Richmond Police Department, CA End of watch: 1984-07-05 Aircraft: Cessna 172 Two Richmond policemen on an air surveillance mission were killed July 5 when their Cessna 172 collided with another small plane and plummeted into a warehouse. Whitty, a 14-year veteran of the Richmond Police Department, who was named 1977s Officer of the Year, lived in Richmond all of his life and was active in a large number of community organizations. He headed an Explorer Scouts Post and was a past board member of the city’s YMCA. He also was active in the Parent-Teacher Association and served as a visiting police officer in several elementary schools. Whitty, also 35, and is survived by his wife Pamela and two children. Wilkinson, Edward In Memory Of Edward Wilkinson Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department, CA End of watch: 1977-04-17 Aircraft: Bell 47 "Angel-1" Detective Sergeant Edward Francis Wilkinson was killed on April 17, 1977 while piloting the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department helicopter “Angel 1.” Sergeant Wilkinson was returning to the helicopter hangar at the Sonoma County Airport after searching for a missing nine-year old girl when the helicopter ran out of fuel and crashed into a field on Barnes Road, approximately one-half mile south of River Road.Also injured in the 4:30 p.m. crash was helicopter observer Reserve Deputy Gloria Baxter. Sergeant Wilkinson was severely injured and succumbed to his injuries later that night. Reserve Deputy Baxter suffered major injuries but ultimately recovered.Sergeant Wilkinson started the Department’s helicopter program and was its first pilot. The helicopter program is still in existence and has been credited with saving many lives through its search and rescue, law enforcement, and medical air ambulance services. The Wilkinson Valor Award was created in Sergeant Wilkinson’s memory to honor fellow officers for acts of heroism and courage above and beyond the call of duty. Sergeant Wilkinson was a 17-year veteran of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department. Sergeant Wilkinson’s ashes were scattered at sea. Wilkinson, Brian In Memory Of Brian Wilkinson Polk County Sheriff, FL End of watch: 2001-10-22 Aircraft: Bell OH-58A Pilot Brian Wilkinson, 33, and TFO Larry Rhoden, 33 were killed when their helicopter crashed in a marsh just north of Bartow. The flight team, who had been providing aerial support to Lakeland deputies during a burglary arrest, was headed back to Bartow. Their last communication with the dispatcher was at 12:58 AM. At 1:06 AM a deputy requested by radio that the helicopter go to an area south of Bartow near a power plant. Investigators believe the helicopter was either headed there or to the agency’s hangar at the Bartow Airbase. Five minutes later, dispatchers tried to contact the helicopter to assist Winter Haven Police Department. Attempts to raise the crew were futile. After repeated attempts to contact the crew by radio and pager were unsuccessful an aerial search was begun. Chief Pilot Greg Love and Flight Officer Rob Gray located the helicopter in a pit near Lake Hancock. Brian Wilkinson, a seven-year veteran of the agency, left behind a wife and infant son. Williams, Laurence In Memory Of Laurence Williams U.S. Coast Guard, CA End of watch: 1994-07-12 Aircraft: HH-65A Dolphin This crew was responding to a grounded sailing vessel. It was dark and the weather was poor as this crew attempted to descend through the fog to assist the vessel in distress. The helicopter impacted the side of a cliff and the entire crew was lost. The aircraft was crewed by LT Laurence B. Williams (CG Aviator #2887), LT Mark E. Koteek (CG Aviator #3113), ASMCS Peter A. Leeman, and AM1 Michael R. Gill. Thoughts and Memories of Laurence Williams AD3 Thomas Throssel I was stationed at Humboldt Bay with Mr. Williams and we often flew together on rescue missions. He was a great guy with a huge sense of humor. I remember a flight we did to a ship in San Francisco Bay to pick him up. After we landed on the back of the ship, he walked out to the helicopter with his dark visor down so his face was hidden. As he got to the door of the helicopter he slid his visor up just as I snapped a picture of his huge smile. Willis, Raymond In Memory Of Raymond Willis Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, CA End of watch: 1957-04-15 Aircraft: unknown airplane Polygraph Technician Raymond Willis, who was an observer, and Sergeant Vernon Corbell, who was assigned to the AERO Bureau, were killed in a plane crash. Sergeant Corbell was piloting a small airplane in search of a downed plane near Malibu. Sergeant Corbell experienced engine trouble and attempted to land. The airplane scraped a hog back ridge at the edge of Puerco Canyon and burst into flames, starting a small brush fire. The plane crashed 500 feet short of the emergency landing strip. Local ranchers rushed to the site but were kept back by the intense heat. The bodies of Corbell and Willis were later recovered by firefighters. Wiltshire, Malcolm In Memory Of Malcolm Wiltshire Hampshire Police, UK End of watch: 1985-05-15 Aircraft: Edgley Optica OA7 Malcolm was on a photographic mission, as duty aerial photographer with his pilot Gerald Spencer. Malcolm was a Detective with The Force photo unit. This was his first operational flight with the Air Support Unit. The aircraft had completed its mission over Ringwood Hampshire, and Gerry Spencer, his pilot had called ATC to that affect and requested a climb in order to return to base. No further call was received from the crew by either police control or ATC. Within 3 mins of this call witnesses reported the aircraft crashing into a small copse of trees. The aircraft caught fire and burned out, both crew died instantly. No medical reasons were found on autopsy that could be attributed to pilot incapacitation. After a lengthy investigation by the UK Air AccidentInvestigation Branch no definitive cause could be found to explain the accident. Speculation was centred on a fuel tank selector, with a possible cause being the over centre selection of the selector that progressively shut off the fuel, but it was officially closed as no proven cause. Tragically Malcolm left a wife and two children, a boy and a girl. Malcolms widow was killed less than a year later in a car crash in Cyprus, while taking her first vacation since the accident. His daughter Ann had a son called James and has now had a son called Harry. Malcolm’s mum passed away last year. Malcolm is now buried with his wife, mum and dad down near Trevone, Cornwall. Winn, Alan In Memory Of Alan Winn U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, HI End of watch: 1991-08-13 Aircraft: MBB BO105LS Special Agent Pilot Alan H. Winn, 37, was killed in a helicopter crash during an operations flight over the island of Hawaii. Special Agent Winn graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in communications. While in the Marine Corps, he trained as a helicopter pilot. In 1985, Special Agent Winn joined the San Diego, California, Police Department as a patrolman and also earned a Master of Science degree in Forensic Science from National University in San Diego. He joined DEA in February 1987 and was Class Representative of Basic Agent Training Class 48. He was then assigned to the San Diego Field Division and in July 1987, was transferred to a Task Force group in the Phoenix Field Division. In April 1988, Special Agent Winn received a Sustained Superior Performance Award. In July 1990, he joined the Phoenix Aviation Section and in April 1991, was reassigned to DEA’s Aviation Section at Hilo, Hawaii. Special Agent Winn was survived by his wife, Kristy, and two daughters, Whitney Lea and Lauren Ashley. I was one of the helicopter mechanics assigned to work in Hawaii at the time of his death. His loss affected me deeply for many years. Perhaps even more than I am willing to admit. I will always remember Alan. I was also saddened to learn that his good friend from the DEA Shawn died in the line of duty as well. My heart goes out to all of the agents that I had the pleasure to work with during my time as a contract mechanic for the DEA. I will always honor those who treated me as an integral part of their mission. My glass still raises to the memory of my good friend ” Atomic Al”. Wood, Gayle In Memory Of Gayle Wood California Highway Patrol, CA End of watch: 1978-09-01 Aircraft: unknown helicopter Officers Gayle W. Wood and James E. McCabe were on air-traffic patrol, making their last run before quitting at dusk when their CHP helicopter crashed and burned near Castaic Lake on Interstate 5. The helicopter struck a power line support that apparently was not visible in the approaching darkness. Officer Wood, the 41-year-old pilot, was a 10-year veteran of the Patrol and had been a CHP pilot for five years. Wood, Barry In Memory Of Barry Wood Baltimore Police Department, MD End of watch: 1998-11-04 Aircraft: Schweizer S300C Baltimore Police Officer Barry W. Wood died when his helicopter crashed while searching for a stolen vehicle. The helicopter was making a precautionary landing when it hit a light pole, then fell onto West Pratt Street and skidded through a tall iron fence. The aircraft ended up on its left side, its cockpit destroyed and its tail sticking out onto the entrance way to the B&O Railroad Museum. Officer Wood was trapped in the wreckage for several minutes before firefighters cut him out. He was transported to the hospital, but he died while undergoing surgery. Thoughts and Memories of Barry Wood David Michael Wilkens Barry and I were classmates in the Warrant Officer Candidate Flight School Class 69-3. At Ft. Wolters, TX from June 68 thru Nov 68 & Ft. Rucker, AL from Nov 68 thru March 69. We then went to our homes with about 15 days leave after graduating as a Warrant Officers & Helicopter pilots before leaving for Vietnam. We hung out during those 9 months of training having many laughs and adventures together, while learning to fly OH-13 training helicopter & then UH1 Hueys before going to Nam. Barry was a good pilot and friend. I just located this site and the information by trying to find him thru the internet. Barry now has his true flight(angel)wings. Woodall, Troy In Memory Of Troy Woodall Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, AL End of watch: 1990-05-30 Aircraft: Hughes TH-55 While conducting a marijuana eradication flight in Crenshaw County, Agent Duaine Troy Woodall and a fellow a ABC agent spotted a suspect tending to a small patch of marijuana. Upon hearing the helicopter, the suspect fled into a wooded area. Agent Woodall landed his helicopter in a nearby clearing to drop-off his observer for a foot pursuit. When Agent Woodall lifted-off to continue airborne observation and support, he struck a power line. The aircraft overturned and hit the ground upside-down. Agent Woodall was pinned under the aircraft and burned to death. His fellow officer could only watch helplessly. Thoughts and Memories of Troy Woodall Claude Cosey Lt. Woodall, You were well respected by the agents you supervised. You always stood up for the men and women who worked under your supervision and you were an effective leader.
