TOPIC: Staff (In-house) Mechanics

Staff (In-house) Mechanics 6 months 2 weeks ago #445

Greetings!

We are exploring the idea of having in-house helicopter maintenance staff. Our current maintenance provider is one of the best in the business, however, all good things must one day come to an end. We would like to be ready to go with a solid plan, should we lose the services of our current provider. Would you please take a moment of time to answer a few questions about your unit concerning this topic:

1. What is the current size of your helicopter fleet and what type of helicopters (make/model) do you fly?
2. Do you have a maintenance service provider or do you have in-house maintenance to provide service for your fleet of helicopters? If in-house, what qualifications i.e. A & P, IA?
3. If you have in-house maintenance, how many mechanics do you have on staff?
4. What are the salaries, including benefits, of your in-house maintenance providers?
5. Do your in-house mechanics provide their own tools, including specialty tools.
6. Do you find it beneficial to have in-house mechanics verses having an outside vendor provided maintenance services to your helicopter fleet? Why or why not?

If you have any other information your would like to share, we would appreciate learning about what you have! If you currently have in-house maintenance providers, would you be so kind as to forward a job description/requirement list? Thank you!!

John,
Washoe County Sheriff in Reno, NV has an in-house mechanic. Here's my answers to your questions:

1. What is the current size of your helicopter fleet and what type of helicopters (make/model) do you fly?
WCSO operates two Hueys and two Kiowas.

2. Do you have a maintenance service provider or do you have in-house maintenance to provide service for your fleet of helicopters? If in-house, what qualifications i.e. A & P, IA?
We have one in-house full-time mechanic and two part-time mechanics. We will soon be getting a second full-time mechanic. All mechanics are A&P only.

3. If you have in-house maintenance, how many mechanics do you have on staff?
One

4. What are the salaries, including benefits, of your in-house maintenance providers?
Full-time pay is $68,536.57 (not including other benefits)

5. Do your in-house mechanics provide their own tools, including specialty tools.
Mechanics provide their own tools, however high dollar special tools are purchased by the agency.

6. Do you find it beneficial to have in-house mechanics verses having an outside vendor provided maintenance services to your helicopter fleet? Why or why not?
In house works best for us. He's on call and available when needed.

Hope this helps.
