Trooper Donald Smith, of Gold Beach, died July 11th, 1983, when the airplane in which he was riding in crashed in a remote wilderness area in Southern Oregon while on a marijuana observation flight. The pilot Curry County Sheriff's Deputy Joseph Omlin III, also died.
