Officer James Douglas Bossen was killed while piloting an aircraft on a prisoner transportation flight. The aircraft crashed in heavy fog, approximately four miles from the Virginia and North Carolina state line, killing all on board. Officer Bossen was a Vietnam veteran and had previously served with the Marion County Sheriff's Department in Indiana for 12 years.
