Fallen Heroes Details

In Memory Of
Tremain Hughes
New York State Police, NY
End of watch: 1932-01-15
Aircraft: Fleet bi-plane
Pilot Lieutenant Tremain M. Hughes died while operating a Fleet biplane owned by the New York State Police. He was following the Cazenovia-Peterboro Road when the plane struck an elm tree, crashed, and burst into flames. Lieutenant Hughes was trapped in the rear cockpit of the burning plane, while Corporal Theophlius Gaines was thrown clear of the wreck and killed instantly. Corporal Gaines, a communications expert, was being transported from SP Batavia to SP Oneida for a teletypewriter system inspection.

Thoughts and Memories of Tremain Hughes

Tremain Hughes was my grandfather. Though he died many years before I was born, I have heard a great many stories about him. He left behind a wife and 3 young children. His daughter, my mother, donated some memorabelia to the Troop D headquarters.

I would be interested to hear any comments or stories anyone might have to share.
