Deputy Thomas Jay Smith, 45, died when the helicopter he was riding in crashed near Newark, TX. The pilot, Lt. George Maurice Hendricks, 51, commander of the Tarrant County Air Unit, also died. The flight had commenced at Meacham International Airport at 0910 hours and was participating in a narcotics training mission when the incident occurred.
