While in transit from Yeager Airport to the West Virginia State Police Academy, 2nd Lt. Charles Matthew Turner [41] died when his helicopter crashed into a wooded hillside at Charleston, WV at 1034 hours. Also killed was Officer G. Wayne Childress [50]. The aircraft was reported by 30 witnesses at 300-500 feet and to have broken up in the air, with a substantial length of the tail section being found some 450 feet from the main wreckage.
