On January 31, 2011 the Pima County Sheriff's Department's helicopter "Survey 3" crashed near Waterman Road and Avra Valley Road while scouting for possible radio tower sites as part of the PCWIN project (working to establish common radio communications between local public service agencies). Tragically, veteran pilot Loren Leonberger was killed in the crash.
