As safety is the foundation of all programs and services offered by APSA, we put safety as the focus of our first bi-monthly issue of the year, as we have since 2007. Cory DeArmitt, APSA Safety Program Manager, has chosen "Realistic Training for Improved Operational Safety" as the safety theme for this issue as well as for all 2024 safety training classes. This issue will focus on how making training as realistic and scenario-based as possible leads to safer real-world operations. As Cory puts it, "train like you'd fight."

Choosing the right tool for the job is an integral part of success, and public safety aviation is no exception. Selecting the right aircraft for the mission is critical to the success and long-term viability of our operations. And the range of choices is greater than ever. This issue examines factors to be considered when choosing between helicopters, airplanes and UAS, explains which aircraft type is best suited for certain missions and illustrates why a fleet comprised of at least one of each of these may be your best bet.
